Ortlieb’s Fork-Pack is a waterproof mini pannier bag designed with a unique quick-release mount that provides excellent security.
It offers versatile fittings to accommodate any fork with at least one braze-on mount, though attaching it to a suspension fork or a rigid one without any bolt fittings is impossible unless you get creative with DIY.
Installation is straightforward for three-bolt mounts but requires careful handling due to low torque requirements. However, attaching the QLS to suspension forks with the adaptor can be more complex, and removing/reattaching it might not provide a clean look when the bag is not in use.
Once mounted, the bag is easy to use, allowing for one-handed removal and staying secure even on rough terrain. The bag itself is durable and reliably waterproof.
The Fork-Pack’s size and location make it ideal for carrying items like cookers, pots, and water, but it’s versatile enough for various purposes, with a 3kg weight limit.
Priced at around $55, it offers good value, especially when considering running a pair. This compares favorably with similar systems, such as the $70 Free Salsa Anything Cage and Bag.

For a fraction of the price of the Ortlieb, I recently purchased a pair of Rhinowalk Fork Bags, and I must say, it’s been a fantastic addition to my bikepacking gear.
This front fork pannier bag is a real bang for the buck. It comes in 6-liter or 4-liter versions and four different colors. I got the 4-liter version to try to build a cheap, minimal bikepacking setup.
Firstly, it lives up to its claim of being 100% waterproof. It’s constructed with durable 500D polyester and an extra layer of waterproof material, ensuring that my belongings stay dry even in heavy rain.
Installation was a breeze thanks to the Quick-Lock System, which lets you buckle the bag to the rear fork, where I wanted it to stay. The mounting bracket and adapter make attaching the bag to the fork or tube simple and secure. Plus, the quick-release function makes disassembly easy when needed.
This mounting system eliminates the need for large cages and long straps, making it look sleek on my bike. I also like that it’s compatible with my other bikes using the same mounting system. They even include an extra strap, just in case.
Haven’t had the chance yet to test it on very rough trails, but if it doesn’t hold up, you can always resort to the old and proven hose-clamp-and-electrical-tape combo.
Another thing I appreciate is the multi-functionality of this bikepacking fork bag. It comes with an adjustable shoulder strap, making it convenient to use as a shoulder bag when off the bike.
Organization-wise, the 4-liter capacity is just right for my needs. It’s not too bulky, and I can easily access my items.
Overall, I’m thoroughly impressed with the Rhinowalk Fork Bag. It’s rugged, waterproof, easy to install, and offers excellent value for the price.

Crafted from a lightweight laminate developed exclusively for Apidura, the bag is not only waterproof but also highly resistant to abrasions and tears. What sets it apart is the hands-free air-release valve, which simplifies packing and compression.
Apidura’s unique attachment mechanism ensures that the straps don’t wrap around the fork itself. This makes attaching and removing the bag much easier and allows for easy access to your items without taking the entire bag off. Multiple attachment loops and adjustable straps make it compatible with any fork cage.
It’s worth noting that the interior of the Fork Packs is slightly grippy, making it a little challenging to stuff items in, which is surprising given Apidura’s attention to detail.
Measuring 3.5″ deep and 3.7″ wide, the Fork Pack is notably slender and can be compressed to a height of just 7.9″ or expanded to 11″ when fully loaded.
It’s effective and minimal shape pairs well with various cargo cages, for heavier items or food storage, heavy-duty cages like the Salsa Anything might be preferable.
Where the Apidura Fork Bag really defects is in its pricing, definitely on the higher end, considering you’ll also have to purchase a cage separately, amounting to a whopping minimum of $200 for a pair. Another thing: they sure look lightweight when you read the specs, but you have to add the whole mounting system to that.
Restrap Fork Bag – 5 Liter

Regarding durability, the Gravel Pack employs laminated ripstop nylon, ensuring strength and waterproofness. However, its lighter, thinner materials may not withstand harsh conditions as effectively as heavier-duty panniers, which could affect its long-term waterproofing performance.
In a world of quickly rising prices, we appreciate Ortlieb staying in the range of affordability, less than $150 for a set, which is quite cheap in the increasingly expensive bikepacking niche.
Restrap Pannier – 13 Liters

The Restrap Small 13L Pannier, crafted in Restrap’s workshop in Leeds from sturdy Cordura fabric, offers a compact front pannier solution for touring cyclists.
Featuring a straightforward, classic design, they incorporate a roll-top closure secured by adjustable buckle-down straps.
The panniers also boast a secure rail and easy-release hooks on the back, with an adjustable lower hook to accommodate various rack types.
The top hooks are suitable for racks with rail diameters from 10-16mm; however, their width is fixed, so you should make sure your rack is long enough.
Their internal structure includes thick plastic panels to maintain shape and stability. Minimal branding is complemented by reflective detailing near the buckles, available in black or khaki.
On-road usage is where these panniers excel, while rough off-road terrain poses challenges, with the lower hook prone to unfastening. Their width when fully packed is also a little drawback on narrow paths.
Despite these challenges, the panniers offered simplicity and ample capacity, accommodating a range of items. The roll-top closures allow for easy capacity adjustments and ensure perfect waterproofness.
Compared to rival options like the Ortlieb Gravel Packs, the Restrap panniers impress with their quality, durability, and UK craftsmanship. They are well-suited for road touring and light gravel rides, but riders tackling rougher terrain may prefer other luggage systems. A larger 22-liter option is available at 831g each.
Thule Shield – 13 Liter

Another brand that’s synonymous with quality is the Swedish firm Thule. Mostly famous for its car bike carriers, the brand’s bikepacking bags are holding their own against the big dogs in the industry.
These 13-liter touring panniers are real bang for the buck at only 150$ per pair – they are solid, 100% waterproof, feature adjustable hooks and a lower locking system to make them compatible with almost any bike luggage rack. An internal pocket is also available.
They might be the best front panniers on this list if it weren’t for their slightly heavier weight compared to competitors, but they’re still my personal favorite. The Thule Shield panniers come in four different sizes: 13L, 17L, 22L, and 25L.
Lone Peak Sundance – 12.5 Liters

The Sundance panniers are among the lightest front bags around, weighing a mere 2.2 lbs per pair. They’re perfect for front panniers or for cyclists who like to keep their bikepacking gear minimal.
Lone Peak means business with its 1000D Nylon construction – tough as nails. The pannier hooks, available in 10mm or 8mm widths, may not be flashy, but they’re dependable. With a center cinch strap to keep things secure, it’s versatile enough for either side of your bike rack.
Inside, you’ll discover a roomy main compartment, a front pocket for easy access, and a handy mesh half-pocket for extras. YKK zippers ensure durability, and 3M reflective details boost visibility.
One thing to note is that the fabric is water-resistant, not fully waterproof, so you’ll need a waterproof cover in case of heavy rain (which is included) – this is the only downside I can mention about this product.
Established in 1979 in the USA, Lone Peak knows its stuff, and guess what? All their production is still proudly done in the United States. So don’t judge by their looks; they’re as reliable as they come.
