This is a great rain poncho for hiking. It is large, so it fits your pack perfectly, even when wearing a larger pack for long day hikes. This makes it a versatile cape you can use for backpacking,g too.

The hood has adjustable straps and a brim protecting you from getting wet. If you are of average height, you can expect it to cover your knees, which is a godsend when hiking in the rain.

Another lovely feature is the ability to be used as a tarp with the use of trekking poles, or even simple sticks, for that matter.

We used this feature a couple of times when we were caught by rain in faraway places, and it was a blessing to have a dry spot to shelter in.

However, what I like the most about this hiking rain poncho is how lightweight it is. It makes it perfect to store in the day pack if the weather forecast is somewhat indecisive.

VAUDE Hiking Backpack Poncho

VAUDE has made one of the best hiking rain ponchos. I absolutely love this one; it is designed specifically for hiking, with a zip on the back that easily creates space for your backpack without being tight.

It is spacious, made of breathable material, long enough to cover most people’s knees, protects you from all sorts of weather, and has an adaptable hood.

Besides, it has a front pocket with a flap to protect it from the rain. Perfect for storing your phone without worrying about it getting wet.

But the front pocket is also where you can easily stuff the rain poncho after it dries. It packs up super easy and it is so handy that the pocket is its own pouch.

Finally, if you are looking for a product that guarantees eco manufacturing, VAUDE is one of the best quality brands out there for outdoor gear, and rain ponchos for hiking are no exception.

Charles River Apparel Pacific Poncho

While this is not the longest poncho on this list, it is probably the most stylish rain cape for hiking. It looks good and comes in different colors, from bright and happy to earthy.

However, I would not recommend it for a longer hike in the rain, as the poncho does not reach the average-built person’s knees, which is one of the most useful features when hiking long distances in wet weather.

On a side note, it works well with a pair of rain pants or waterproof pants.

Another reason I would not recommend it for longer rain treks is that it has buttons rather than a zipper, which could let in water if the rain is heavy enough. It also lacks a visor beak to protect your face from the rain.

Thus, this is a great rain poncho for hiking if you want something you can use not only on the trail but also when going for a stroll in town. It is a good option for shorter hikes and light rain.

This is a lightweight military-style poncho that I really like, and it is also very durable. This also makes the poncho function as a shelter.

The disadvantage of this rain poncho for backpacking is that it might be a little short for taller people, especially with a larger backpack, as it will probably not cover your pack properly, and you might not reach the finger straps comfortably.

Mil-Tec Ripstop Wet Weather Poncho

This is a really cool, versatile rain poncho perfect for backpacking. My favorite feature is that you can use it as a tarp, sleeping bag cover, or ground sheet.

You can also strap two ponchos together for a larger shelter, which is ideal if you backpack with a partner or friend using the same backpacking rain poncho.

Further, it has hood straps and ripstop material, making it not only waterproof but solid when hiking in areas with lots of branches and bushes that can easily rip up your poncho – something you want to avoid at all costs!

While it is a cool multi-use cape for backpacking, it is on the heavier side and lacks pockets to store your phone or camera when hiking.

FROGG TOGGS Ultra-Lite2 Poncho

If you are looking for an ultra-light budget-friendly rain poncho for backpacking as a backup rain cape, this is my top choice.

Its large design easily covers both you and your backpack. It has adjustable hood straps, but when it comes to features, it stops there, as you can expect from such an affordable option.

The downside is that the material is pretty thin, so I doubt that it will handle much wear from bushes and branches brushing by.

But if you know you are going to open areas without any obstacles, this is actually a great addition to your backpacking gear, not only as a backup.

VAUDE Valdipino Poncho

VAUDE is one of my favorite sustainable brands for outdoor apparel. They combine style, quality, and sustainability, and this rain poncho is no exception.

It is super lightweight, so it can easily be stashed away in your bike pack while not in use. Besides, this cycling rain poncho will keep you dry.

It also has hand straps and a front pocket with a protective flap, perfect for storing your phone while pedaling.

It has a hood with a visor beak, straps that cover your head perfectly, and hand straps that prevent it from flying back when cycling.

This is easily my favorite bike rain poncho so far. It comes in different colors; Marine blue, orange, and light yellow. If you want to brighten up the day a little, the orange one is awesome!

SaphiRose Lightweight Cycling Rain Poncho

This is a great rain poncho for biking that perfectly covers the handlebars while cycling. The material is soft, yet fends off the rain perfectly.

The hood has an adjustable strap, a snap on the back, and a visor beak to keep your face as dry as possible when pedaling in the rain. It also has finger straps to prevent it from flying off when cycling.

Further, the zipper is waterproof, and my favorite feature is the front pocket (also waterproof). It is ideal for carrying your phone or camera, should the rain slow down a bit, and for snapping a picture or two of your bikepacking or cycle touring adventure.

And finally, what better color than yellow to brighten up a rainy day? Though mostly, it is a fabulous color to spot on an otherwise gray day on the road. When it comes to being seen, it has a reflective stripe on the back for extra visibility.

This is a great budget-friendly poncho for cycling. It is one-size-fits-all, which means it is nothing fancy, yet it does the job. If you are on a budget or you will not use it very often, it is a top choice.

It has a small front pocket with a flap to protect it from the rain, a hood with a visor, and adjustable straps.

What I love about it is its versatility. You can use it for both hiking and cycling.

However, the downside of this rain cape for cycling is that it does not fully cover your hands and handlebars.

You can tell that it is not made specifically for cycling, but I like that it is an affordable option. So if you only cycle occasionally and might need it for hiking too, this is a good budget option.

But don’t worry, I will go through the three here so that you know what to look for before I get into the best ponchos for each activity type below.

Hiking – Rain caps for hiking and trekking should ideally cover both you and your backpack, thus they should be longer in the back.

However, you might have a rain cover for your backpack and not worry too much about covering it. It is also good that it covers your knees, keeping your legs as dry as possible.

Backpacking – While rain ponchos for hiking and backpacking are pretty much the same, you might prefer a lightweight option to minimize extra weight in your backpack.

It is also more crucial that the rain poncho covers the backpack since you can’t just go home and dry the back of your backpack when the day ends. This makes a long back on the poncho a necessity for backpackers.

Cycling – When looking for the perfect rain poncho for cycling, you want to ensure it is longer in the front than the hiking and backpacking ones, so it covers the handlebars.
