Summer Cycling Gloves: Do You Really Need Them? (Yes — Here’s Why + Our Choice)

Last updated:

The best summer cycling gloves of 2026 reviewed: GripGrab, Castelli, POC, Pearl Izumi, and more. Lightweight, breathable, and padded options for road, MTB, and bike touring.

Wearing cycling gloves, even in warm weather, has several advantages in my opinion. They protect your hands and prevent calluses from forming — if you don’t wear gloves, the calluses will become your gloves, and that’s exactly what happened to me in Southeast Asia, where it was simply too hot to wear even the lightest gloves.

Another advantage is that they keep your hands clean: when travelling, you sometimes can’t find a place to wash your hands when you need one. They’re easy to hand-wash and dry quickly. The only downside is the inevitable glove-shaped tan line that will form.

They’re also small and compact: you can keep them in your handlebar bag, pocket, or top tube bag, and pull them on when needed — for example, on a cool descent. Honestly, I wouldn’t spend much on gloves; I’ve lost more pairs than I can remember, but perhaps that’s just me.

Fingerless Summer Cycling Gloves

The most popular choice for warm-weather riding. Fingerless gloves offer just the right balance between protection and breathability. A padded palm reduces vibration and prevents calluses on long rides, while the open fingers keep your hands cool. They’re compact enough to fit in any pocket or bag, and easy to hand-wash and dry overnight.

Our Choice: POC Agile Short Gloves Road

A minimalist, performance-focused summer glove from Swedish safety brand POC. Designed for riders who prioritise direct bar feel and maximum breathability over padding, the Agile Short is built specifically for hot-weather road riding.

The glove combines a lightweight and highly breathable mesh back with a thin and highly ventilated palm to help ensure sweaty palms don’t ruin comfort and control. A silicone print at the base of each finger aids grip, and a terrycloth nose wipe on the thumb makes it easy to wipe sweat away.

Unlike most summer gloves, the Agile Short is notably unpadded — a deliberate design choice. The 4-way stretch mesh gives a close, comfortable fit and ventilation to keep hands cool on deep summer rides. Riders who find traditional gel pads cause hand fatigue will appreciate the minimalist palm construction.

Specs:

  • Short finger (fingerless) design
  • 4-way stretch lightweight mesh back
  • Perforated, ventilated palm — no padding
  • Silicone print grip at base of fingers
  • Terrycloth thumb sweat wipe
  • Pull tabs for easy removal
  • Elasticated cuff closure
  • Best for: road cycling, hot weather, riders who prefer minimal padding

Ultra-lightweight Full-finger Gloves

When the temperature drops during a long descent or an early-morning ride, a thin full-finger glove makes a big difference. Modern versions are made from mesh or perforated fabrics that remain breathable even in heat. They also offer better sun protection, helping avoid the classic cyclist tan line.

Our Choice: Handup Summer Lite Full Finger

A lightweight, full-finger glove built specifically for hot weather riding. Unlike traditional fingerless mitts, the Summer Lite offers complete hand coverage without sacrificing breathability — making it a smart choice for riders who want sun protection and a secure grip on warm days.

The highly breathable construction allows airflow across the entire hand, keeping sweat and heat build-up to a minimum even during intense efforts. The thin, flexible materials maintain a direct feel on the handlebars, so you never feel like you’re wearing too much on a hot day.

Versatile enough for road, XC, enduro, downhill, and even motocross use, these gloves work equally well tucked into a jersey pocket for a cool descent or worn all day on a long tour.

Specs:

  • Full finger coverage
  • Lightweight, breathable construction
  • Suitable for: road cycling, XC, enduro, downhill, motocross
  • Unisex fit
  • Ideal temperature range: warm to hot weather

Gel-padded Cycling Gloves

Designed for long-distance riders, gel-padded gloves add an extra layer of cushioning between your hands and the handlebars. Particularly useful on rough roads or gravel, where vibration builds up over hours of riding. Look for models with thin, breathable backs and gel inserts concentrated on the palm and the base of the thumb.

Our Choice: Castelli Rosso Corsa Pro V Gloves.

Pro-level cycling mitts with maximum padding and a secure closure. The palm features gel padding and a silicone grip. The Castelli Damping System distributes pressure away from the median nerve to eliminate numbness after hours in the saddle.

Specs:

  • CDS (Castelli Damping System) gel padding
  • Textured mesh back
  • Velcro wrist closure
  • Silicone grip pattern on the palm
  • Best for: long road rides, racing

Anti-slip Grip Cycling Gloves

Sweaty hands on a hot day can reduce handlebar control. Anti-slip gloves feature silicone or textured rubber patterns on the palm that maintain a firm grip even in wet or sweaty conditions. Ideal for technical riding, mountain passes, or simply humid climates.

Our Choice: Souke Sports Cycling Bike Gloves

A solid budget-friendly option for road and MTB riders who want reliable padding and breathability without spending a lot. These half-finger bike gloves perform well on both roads and mountain trails, offering moisture-wicking breathable 4-way stretch and thick, impact-resistant padding.

Gel pads on the palm and soft synthetic leather provide excellent grip and control even on rough roads, while the soft microsuede thumb panel won’t feel abrasive when wiping away sweat. A practical detail that makes a real difference on long hot rides.

UV Protection Cycling Gloves

Made from SPF-rated fabrics, they shield the back of your hands from sun damage while remaining light and breathable. A practical choice for long days in the saddle, especially at altitude or in sunny destinations where tan lines are a real concern.

Our Choice: CASTELLI Men’s Espresso Glove

A premium Italian-made summer glove that blends style and performance for road and gravel riders. Made with Air-O stretch fabric, air circulates, keeping hands cool and dry, with no fabric creasing for a perfect fit. The padded palm with silicone grip ensures hands stay mobile and comfortable even on long-distance rides.

A standout feature for summer riding is the built-in sun protection. The glove is constructed with material that provides UPF 30 sun protection, combining safety and protection for all rides — a practical solution to the classic cyclist tan line problem.

Quick-dry Travel Cycling Gloves

Perfect for bike touring and long-distance travel. Designed to be washed by hand and dry within a few hours, ideal when you’re moving every day. Lightweight and compact, they take up almost no space in a handlebar bag or pocket. Don’t spend too much on these — they’re easy to lose.

Our Choice: Dueeco Summer Cycling Gloves

A lightweight budget-friendly glove that stands out for its use of XRD padding technology — a material more commonly found in premium protective gear. A solid choice for riders who want serious shock absorption in a light, affordable package.

The back of the glove uses breathable mesh material imported from Italy, keeping hands cool and dry. The XRD padding on the palm is thinner than traditional foam, which contributes to air circulation while keeping you on the road longer by reducing fatiguing vibrations, preventing numbing pressure points, and providing a confident, slip-free grip on the handlebars.

What makes XRD padding special is its smart material behaviour — it stays soft and flexible during normal use but hardens on impact to absorb shock, then immediately returns to its resting state. This means better protection with less bulk compared to standard foam or gel pads, making it particularly well-suited to warm-weather riding where every gram of material adds heat.

Specs:

  • Short finger (fingerless) design
  • XRD impact-absorbing palm padding
  • Italian breathable mesh back
  • Anti-slip palm construction
  • Unisex sizing
  • Reflective details for low-light visibility
  • Best for: road cycling, MTB, warm-weather riding
